Theme: Transforming the narrative: Contributions at home, at work, in the arts and in policymaking.
World Autistic Pride Day is commemorated every year on the 18th of June. World Autistic Pride Day is celebrated by autistic people and their advocators to identify the significance of pride for autistic people and its vital role in bringing about positive changes in society at large.
This year’s theme is all about the necessary change that must be brought into the narrative of autistic people so that society will be more welcoming in accepting them at work and in the arts. Counter narratives can also boost the changes in policymaking – supporting the laws which ease up the receptivity of society towards autistic people.
SIGNIFICANCE OF WORLD AUTISTIC PRIDE DAY
- It educates the public about the difficulties that those living with autism face.
- It reminds us to treat Autistic persons with respect and empathy in order to combat stigma.
- Equal opportunities should also be made available to people with autism on this day.
AUTISM OR AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS
Autism spectrum sickness (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder impacting how humans interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. Although autism can be recognized at any age, it is described as a “developmental disorder” due to the fact that the signs and symptoms normally start to present within the first two years of life.
Autism is usually first diagnosed in childhood. About one in 110 children is diagnosed with autism. The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders in boys is three-four times greater than in girls. In many cases, autism is a lifelong disorder, but studies demonstrate an increase in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders who eventually function independently and lead full lives. Here, we focus mainly on children and adolescents.
Autistic Pride Day is represented by the rainbow infinity symbol. This symbol is intended to represent the diversity of autistic people and the infinite possibilities and variations within the autistic community.
People with autism have unique characteristics that provide them with both rewards and challenges. Although many of the difficulties they face are because of their neurodiversity, another factor is issues in society. For example, society’s attitude towards autism is often one of pity or a belief that it is a condition requiring treatment.
Activists want to shift attitudes away from this and towards acceptance and the realization that autism is a difference rather than a disability.
